In all seriousness though, the song was written by Pete Brown, as were many of Creams songs. If you've ever heard any of the music Pete did while he was with the bands 'The Battered Ornaments' or 'Piblokto', then you'd understand just how off the wall these guys really were during the later part of the 60's, due to chemical enhancement.


According to Pete, the song title came from an incident when flowers were delivered one day to his apartment. Jack Bruce had ordered them for his girlfriend, but hadn't specified the type of flower. When the bouquet arrived, the chemically-enhanced duo were impressed. Pete was particularly taken by the way the long stems of the flowers swayed back and forth. He told Jack that the flowers reminded him of the way a woman walks. The flowers in the bouquet turned out to be Irises - a variety known as 'Bearded Rainbow'. The rest of the meaning is within the song I believe. It's been awhile since I've given the 'Disraeli Gears' album a spin.
